Preparing For An Imaging Scan

An MRI or any other kind of image might sound frightening as you usually get these tests done if the doctor suspects that something is wrong inside the body. When you arrive at the center for medical imaging in NJ, you will find that the process is easy, and there is no pain involved with getting a scan completed. At times, you might need an IV so that a dye can run through the veins. This is done to allow the doctor to see if there are any arteries that are bleeding or any blockages.

In most instances, you are out of the office in less than an hour. You can usually leave your clothing on while the scan is completed, but you will probably have to wear a thick apron to block out the radiation from the machine. The doctor might order that you don't eat anything before the scan so that a clear image can be achieved. However, if you are having a scan of the abdomen, then drinking water before the scan can sometimes help to enlarge the area, which can make it easier to view the bladder and kidneys.

When you make the appointment for the scan, you need to let the staff know if you have a pacemaker, if you're pregnant or if you have any skin tattoos as the magnet in the MRI can pull the tattoos from the skin. You also need to let the staff know if you have any kind of metal implants, an insulin pump or if you are claustrophobic. An option is an open MRI if you have a fear of being in enclosed spaces.

Leave all of your valuables at home as you won't need them during the scan. Cotton clothing without any metal attached is best to wear if you don't want to change into a hospital gown for the scan. Take a list of all of the medications that you are taking as well as a list of the symptoms that you are experiencing. You should also report if there are any new issues that have developed since visiting with the doctor.
