How To Treat Migraine Symptoms

Thursday, July 25, 2019

Migraine headaches are the most common problems seen today among people of all age groups.  Nearly 12% of the population in the US, including children, suffers from migraine, amongst which 18% are women, 6% are men, and 10% are children. Mostly, it tends to affect people between the ages of 18 and 44.

Migraine isn’t a typical headache, but a throbbing pain or a pulsing sensation on one side of the head accompanied by vomiting, nausea, and sensitivity to light and sound. Most of the migraine attacks last for hours to days with a severe pain that interferes in your daily activities.

If you often have severe headaches, it is high time to diagnose whether it is a Migraine, so that you can start treatment accordingly.

Below are some tips that would help you to alleviate the Migraine symptoms-
Surgery For Migraines

With the development in the new approaches to treat migraines, your doctor may recommend migraine surgery as a part of treatment.

There is a group of nerves in the face and neck that are linked to migraine reactions. Surgical decompression of these nerves involves the use of Botox injection that reduces or eliminates migraines.

Medications To Relief Migraine Pain

Medications used to relieve migraines fall into two categories:

Pain-Relieving Medications: Also known as an abortive or acute treatment, this type of medication means the intake of drugs or pills whenever the symptoms occur. It includes over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen and aspirin.

However, if taken for too long, they may cause side-effects such as ulcers and other gastro problems.
Preventive Medication: These medications are taken regularly to decrease the frequency or severity of the migraines. If you have frequent and long-lasting headaches that don’t respond to the pain relievers, your doctor may recommend preventive medications.

It includes antidepressants, blood pressure-lowering medicines, riboflavin, coenzyme Q 10, etc.

Home Remedies To Treat Migraines

Natural or home remedies are a drug-free way to reduce migraine symptoms. Here is a list of things you can do to prevent migraines-

Aerobic Exercises: You can choose any aerobic activity to reduce stress, such as swimming, walking, or cycling. Make sure to warm up slowly, because intense exercise can cause a headache.

Acupressure: It is a credible alternative for people who suffer from chronic headaches. It is the practice of applying pressure with hands and fingers to specific points on the body to relieve pain.

Add Magnesium To Your Diet: Magnesium deficiency is linked to migraines. You can add foods sunflower seeds, peanut butter, oatmeal, almonds, eggs, milk, cashews, etc. to increase the magnesium content in your diet.

Relaxation Techniques: Biofeedback and other types of relaxation training help you to deal with stressful situations that reduce migraines.

Prepare Your Appointment with the Doctor

If you regularly have any of these signs or symptoms of migraine, it is time to see your doctor immediately:

A severe headache with fever, stiff neck, trouble speaking, or numbness.
       Headache after a severe injury.
A chronic headache after coughing, exertion, or a sudden movement.

You can keep a record unusual sensations or sudden headache, how long it lasted, and what triggered it. It would help your doctor to diagnose the condition better. Further, make a list of all the medications or supplements; you’ve used to treat the headaches.

Conclusion

If you suffer from migraines, you know that its symptoms are quite challenging to cope with. You can first try home remedies, and medications to prevent the throbbing pain. However, if it doesn’t work, you should not delay your visit to the doctor.
