Myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME)– According to the ME Association, there are various names used for an illness that an uncertain cause. There are estimated to be more than 250,000 people in Britain alone that are affected by the illness.

Names that Myaligic encephalomyelitis are alsoknown by are:
  • ME
  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS)
  • Post Viral Fatigue Syndrome (PVFS)
  • Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction Syndrome (CFIDS)
For many years health professionals have argued over whether it is an definiteailment, but in recent years the World Health Organization, the Royal Colleges of Physicians, Psychiatrists and General Practitioners and the Department of Health, are all now in agreement that ME is a real illness.

Causes or initial onset of ME include:

Thought to be linked to a person having a viral infection – glandular fever is on possible link and with some professionals stating this may activate the condition. The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a virus that is found in saliva of someone who has had glandular fever. The cells in the lining of the throat can be infected by the virus.

The infection then passes into the blood stream and infects the white blood cells. They in turn carry the infection to the lymphatic system. Because the infection has attacked this system, the symptom of fatigue will appear, sometimes staying with the person for months. This however is only a theory of how ME/Chronic fatigue syndrome is caused and has not been proven.

A small majority of people who have this illness will completely get better, but the majority of cases will often have relapses often after infections, operations or perhaps triggered by stressful events. A significant amount of cases will remain severely affected and therefor require lots of support both emotionally and day to day practicalities.

Unfortunately there are a few cases that will continue to get worse, but this is rare, however when this happens it is recommended that other illnesses are to be looked into before definite diagnosis of ME is decided.
